Certified Recreation Therapist, John Altman, works as the Recreation Manager for Hillside Children's Center in Varick, NY. He was on a mission to give the youth in his programs a truer high school experience and was having a hard time instilling "school pride" in a group that carried the stigma of being in placement. The youth did not wear the Hillside brand proudly as they attended public outings, played in sporting events and even travel in vans that do not have their organization's logo on the side.
The irony in the digital man's recent return to nature trip through the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, and the Badlands was mimicked in the editorial illustration we created for the popular magazine. Sifting through tons and tons of his personal photos from this amazing summer trip brought me back to road trips in the station wagon with my best friend's family. Wanting to capture the irony in this trip, we went with a retro style of the illustrative postcards that adorned the windows of so many destination souvenir shops.
Who do you call when you need to shoot, design and print a 200 page catalogue in 8 weeks? A3 Design of course! We were thrilled to be pulled in on this project from the start. With initial meetings consisting of the heavy lifting in planning, organization and project management, we had set up a solid plan for execution.
This month's issue of Esquire magazine is a little different than all the rest. A3 Design's illustration is featured in November for the editorial "See America... in a Korean car." The juxtaposition between the very retro illustration and the modern photo of the car perfectly visualizes the article. Pick up your copy today and take a peek at the credits on page 52!
Look for another one soon! We are working on an editorial illustration for a fun travel article that will be published in February 2010.
